Allegra and Back Pain

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

If Allegra is causing back pain, consider the following remedies:

Medications
Applying heat or cold to the painful area.

Medications
Patients who take Allegra and experience back pain often benefit from using pain relief medicines, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®), aspirin, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin® or Advil®).

Heat/Cold
Moist heat, such as a warm bath or shower, or dry heat, such as a heating pad, placed on the painful area of the back for about 15 minutes may relieve back pain. In some cases, cold packs (a bag of ice or frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel) can relieve pain or numb the sore area. If you have poor circulation, do not use cold packs. Water therapy in a heated pool or whirlpool may also relieve back pain and stiffness.

Final Thoughts on Allegra and Back Pain
If you experience back pain while taking Allegra and the suggestions above do not provide relief, talk with your healthcare provider. There are other treatment options that he or she may be able to recommend. Also, depending on how severe your back pain is, he or she may also recommend that you adjust your Allegra dosage or try another medicine.

Allegra and Insomnia

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Some people taking Allegra find that improving their sleep habits can be an effective insomnia cure. Some tips for better sleep include:

Keeping a regular sleep-wake cycle. Try going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
Avoiding caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine in the four to six hours before bedtime.
Refraining from exercise within two hours of bedtime. (Exercising five or six hours before bedtime may help you sleep more soundly.)
Not eating large meals within two hours of bedtime.
Not taking naps later than 3 p.m.
Sleeping in a dark, quiet room at a comfortable temperature.

If you can’t fall asleep within 20 minutes, do a quiet activity somewhere else and return to bed when you are sleepy.

Wind down in the 30 minutes before bedtime with a relaxing pre-sleep ritual, such as a warm bath, soft music, or reading.

Eat a heart-healthy diet. This diet should include:
o Fruits, vegetables, grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
o Lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts
o Limited amounts of foods containing saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium (salt), and added sugars.
Engage in regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week.

Limit your intake of alcohol.

Also, if you are noticing weight gain with Allegra, talk to your healthcare provider. He or she can give you other suggestions for dealing with any weight gain. If the weight gain continues, he or she may recommend other lifestyle choices or a switch to another allergy medication.
